Ronald Fensky and Donald Fensky were both born on the fourteenth of August to Mister and Missus Fensky. Ronald wasnot quite so cocky. “But we have never thrown a party this big before. We invited half the neighbourhood plus one and we own only twelve deck chairs between us. Event rentals would help us manage the crowd and keep them entertained.”
“I got all the entertainment we need programmed into my Casio Lady-Killer!” Donald clawed the air with his fingers and spun on the spot with the grace of a drunken panhandler. “You know I got grooves.”
Unfortunately Ronald knew too well, so the brothers agreed to throw separate parties for the first time in their tangled lives. While Ronald studied online for party-planning tips, Donald dusted off his keyboard and let the day approach.
The parties were split by a fluorescent yellow badminton net that ran between their backyards. The brothers had decided years ago that it would be much more fun than a fence. But on their thirtieth birthday, as Donald peered through the bright netting with droopy eyes, the only fun he saw was being had on the other side. Ronald’s event rentals had drawn the whole crowd to his half, leaving Donald alone with a stack of a paper party hats and his Casio Lady-Killer.
As laughter lifted into the air and lasers swirled over the swaying crowd, Ronald restocked the kernels in the popcorn machine and added a few more songs to his play list. The speakers he rented would have been loud enough to make the entire block hate him if they had not been dancing along on his lawn.
“Where did you get all this equipment? It is like an outdoor nightclub in the day! Are you some kind of technician?” Ronald’s neighbours were partying harder than they had since high school.
“All of this is event rentals,” he shouted back to them bashfully, “I found a great rental place in the city that helped me with everything.” He heard a familiar voice behind him.
“They must be awesome,” Donald said, crushing a paper hat in his sweaty hand. “I will have to give them a look next year.”
Ronald grinned and lifted his drink to his brother. “Until then, happy birthday, Donald.”
“Happy birthday, Ronald.”
